Ok, so working the hours you want to work is a major perk. Major. You can wake up when you want to, take a midweek vacation, take lunch at 9:30am, or work in the middle of the night.
While the choose-your-own-adventure type schedule is a huge reason why a lot of people choose a career of freelance copywriting, it’s far from the best part about it.
I’m going to give you 17 other reasons why working as a freelance copywriter is the best career on the planet.
If you’ve always wanted to live a nomadic lifestyle (what’s up, Van Life!), freelance copywriting is a great career choice. Not having to punch a timecard or report to a single location everyday allows you the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want. Just make sure you have adequate internet access!
How many times have you gotten home from an absolutely draining day at work and collapsed on your couch screaming the words I hate my boss? When you work as a freelance copywriter, you can work with the clients you want to, and pass on the ones you don’t.
Feel like taking a week off? That’s your choice as a freelancer. Don’t want to write a last-minute article for a client on a Friday night? You can decline. Working as a freelancer is just that — freelance. You aren’t obligated to pick up any more work than you want (or need) to.
Just like saying no when you want to, you can also agree to work when you want it. If you want to bring in some extra cash one month, you can pick up as many clients as it takes to meet your goals.
This one is a big one for people who despise buttoning up too-stiff shirts, ironing their pants, or wearing uncomfortable shoes (raise your hand!). Working as a freelancer means you get to choose your own work attire. If that means yoga pants seven days a week or dressing in an 1800s-style ball gown, you can rock what you want to.
2pm hits. You’re tired and you want some of that sweet, sweet, caffeinated lifeblood. You’re no longer stuck trudging to the breakroom for stale coffee that tastes like regret and disdain. You can take yourself out for a midday latte or enjoy your pick-me-up of choice right from your own kitchen.
No more getting stopped by the office Gossip who wants to share her garbage opinions on what the IT guy does with his time off, or walking past hushed conversations that you’re sure are about you.

If you live in a metropolitan area, you understand the complete timesuck it is to sit in rush hour traffic twice per day.
If you’re still stuck driving to your job every day, calculate the amount of time you spend in traffic in a single day. Then multiply that by five. Then multiply that number by 52.
That’s how much time you spend in traffic in a single year, just driving to and from work.
One of the best things about being a freelance copywriter is that you don’t have to justify needing to take a mental health day, a vacation, or even using your hard-earned time off. Working as a freelancer relieves you of the guilt trips from HR when you need to spend a day away from the office.
Guess who writes the ‘company policy’ when you’re a freelancer? You do.
Want to blast your music at 8am while you work? Do it.
Feel like spewing profanities when an assignment is stressing you out? You do you.
Want to take a break in the middle of the day and make a cheeseburger for your dog? All you, baby.
If you really miss being reprimanded, you can write yourself up.
Needing to take a sick day can be astronomically frustrating when you work for a company. Not everyone has the means to visit a doctor every time they’re feeling under the weather, and not every ailment requires medical attention.

Working as a freelance copywriter doesn’t have a pay ceiling. As your skills improve and as you gain more experience, you can justify charging your clients more money. While it’s ultimately the decision of your clients if they agree to your terms, you don’t have to ask anyone for a raise.

A shared office can be a fun, collaborative environment — or it can be a total hell, depending on who you’re sharing it with. One of the biggest perks of being a freelance copywriter is that your space is your own, and your distractions are minimized.
Working as a freelancer is essentially running your own copywriting business. When you own your own business, you call the shots. Every single decision is up to you, from whether or not you want to rebrand your website to what clients you try to land.
Guess what? You’re the boss! No more recapping every minute of your workday to a boss. Think of how much more productive you’ll be without having to document and prove every single action you take while working on a project.
But, keep in mind that you absolutely should take notes on what you’re doing. It will help you immensely in the long run.

If you’ve never been a morning person and do your best work in the late hours of the night or in the middle of the afternoon, you can adjust your work schedule to accommodate your sleep schedule, and not the other way around.
To me, this tops the list. In my opinion, the very best thing about working as a freelance copywriter is that I’m not leaving my dogs alone all day.
They’re only here for a blip of my lifetime, and because I can work at home, I can sit with them curled up next to me while I write.
And that twice-daily stuck in rush hour traffic mentioned above? I now spend that time walking my dogs and taking them to the park.
The most precious resource we have is time, and it’s time to own yours.
